How to Overcome Anxiety
Stressed out and wondering how to overcome anxiety?
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 NIV
Sometimes the attacks would occur in the form of me waking up in the middle of the night, gasping for air. I would jump straight up and start walking around the room quoting scripture as I paced the floor in the dark.
On other occasions I would be driving, and start feeling like I couldn’t breath. I'd let the windows down and begin to breath slowly and deeply. I'd reapeatedly whisper very short scripture confessions in between breaths, “I have the mind of Christ and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.”
There were several of these attacks after my mother and grandmother passed away and then during my divorce. Yes, he was attacking me hard. My doctor prescribed medication and I followed the instructions. But, as a believer, I also knew that the power to overcome was within me-through Christ Jesus.
As such, I was ahead of the game and well on my way to conquering anxiety. Of course, as the enemy does, he would occasionally come back with this same trick from time to time, but he no longer had a stronghold on my mind.
There are three simple things you can do when the enemy attempts to attack you with anxiety.
Some Steps To Take
- Breath deeply and deliberately: If you have a tendancy to hyperventilate, breathing in this manner will help greatly. First, it takes your mind off of the anxiety as you become more focused on breathing. Second, it relaxes you and slows your heart rate. Thirdly,it reduces stress. It really does work.
- Repeat Scripture: Put God's word to work and increase your faith at the same time. By speaking the word you are
calling those things that be no as though they were. When you speak it, you hear it. When you hear it, your faith increases."No weapon formed against me shall prosper", "I have the mind of Christ", I have the peace of God that surpasses all understanding", "Greater is he that is in me than he that is the world".
- Think and Focus on something pleasant: Remember the verse that says,“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things. Philippians 4:8” NIV- I would focus on my nieces and nephews, my happiest moments, my son's silly grin.
- Sing Praise and Worship Songs: The bible tells us that God inhabits our praise. Your praise is your weapon. "But thou art holy, thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. Psalm 22:3 KJV" We further read in, 2 Corinthians 3:17, "Where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty." God dwells among us during praise and worship, and His very presence brings freedom from strongholds.
Go through these steps as many times as necessary until you’ve taken control of your thoughts and your body’s reaction to them. Once you learn how to overcome anxiety, you can also keep the attacks at bay.
